Burning The Clocks

Brighton

Burning the Clocks is a unique and much-loved winter solstice celebration held annually in Brighton on December 21st. This event blends community, creativity, and the marking of the year's end. Local residents craft lanterns from paper and willow, which they parade through the streets of Brighton. The procession culminates on the beach, where the lanterns are placed onto a bonfire and set alight in a symbolic act of letting go of the old year and welcoming the new.

The festival was created in 1994 as a way for the people of Brighton to celebrate the festive season in a non-commercial, inclusive way. It has since grown into a beloved community event, drawing thousands of participants and spectators. Accompanied by live music, fire dancers, and a fireworks finale, Burning the Clocks offers a powerful, reflective moment to close the year, blending art, tradition, and celebration.
