Badgers Tea House

At badgers Tea House, visitors can enjoy tea served in fine bone china cups, poured from elegant silver teapots, either in their delightful walled garden or the cosy tea room. Guests can indulge in freshly baked homemade cakes, scones, clotted cream, jam, and much more. As a family-owned and run establishment, badgers Tea House places a strong emphasis on quality, using the finest ingredients and providing exceptional service.

A little bit of history: Alfriston was granted its market charter in 1406, and the building housing badgers Tea House dates back to 1510. Historically, it functioned as the village bakery for 200 years until 1933. During this time, residents would bring cakes to be baked there. Richard Harryott, known as Doughy, managed the bakery in the 1700s. As domestic ovens became more affordable, many villages, including Alfriston, saw their local bakeries close.

In the late 18th century, “Dissenters” from St Andrew’s Church met at this location until they built their own independent church in 1801, now the United Reformed Church, which sadly closed in 2009. A Standing Stone can even be found in the pavement outside the front door. Alfriston’s rich history is worth exploring further after a visit to badgers Tea House.
